Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 12–35 m tall.

Stems: Bark grayish white, yellow, or bluish gray, smooth throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 11–15 cm long, 2–2.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles quadrangular, 12–21 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 10–17 mm long, pedicels 2–7 mm long. buds cylindrical or urceolate, 10–12 mm long, 4–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum hemispherical, apiculate, usually wider than hypanthium. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit ovoid or urceolate; ribbed; 9–16 mm long; 6–10 mm wide; valves 3–4; included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22; 24

Habitat: Planted on O'ahu and Hawai'i and occurring sporadically on Hawai'i.
